Take a Safe Boating Course
Know your load limit. Always carry the necessary safety gear and know how to use it.
If you don't know how to swim.....LEARN!
Keep life jackets visible and accessible...and never make someone uncomfortable when they choose to wear one.
Learn the "rules of the road"...and obey them!
Don't overdo your boating fun. In three hours of normal boating, the noise, motion, sun , wind and glare can frequently reduce an individual's reaction time.
Be a sober Skipper! Alcohol adversely affects vital body functions such as balance, coordination, vision and judgment. It may also slow your reaction time and increase your susceptibility to hypothermia.
Keep an eye on the weather. Obtain up-to-date weather information from marine band radio, AM radio or simply watching the sky.

Before you leave on a boating trip, file a "float plan" by simply telling someone where you are going and when you will return. If you run into trouble, it will assist authorities in searching for you.
