"On the evening of
August 1st the 1900 foot I-35W Bridge Collapse Response Team's quick
deployment of active, reserve, and auxiliary boat forces ensured security
zone enforcement was in place throughout the high profile recovery
operations. The Team's outstanding response efforts kept the public
out of harms way and provided a safe operational dive area for the U.S.
Navy Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 and the Hennepin County Sheriff in
their work recovering the remaining victims from the bridge debris.
During the complex recovery efforts, the Team enforced a twenty-four hour
security zone on the Upper Mississippi River and provided waterside
security during visits to the disaster site by the President, First Lady,
Secretary of the Department of Transportation, and Secretary of the Navy.
Furthermore, the Team worked with local, state and federal agencies as
well as industry within the joint Emergency Operations Center to
coordinate the security and recovery efforts in support of the National
Transportation Safety Board investigation. The Team's flexibility
and outstanding performance of duty during this emergent multi-agency
operation truly demonstrated the great strengths of the Coast Guard, and
exemplifies our service's continued value to the Nation." |
