"While
on patrol on the Upper Mississippi River at mile marker 515.5, Auxiliary
Facility 2620973 received a Mayday call from distressed vessel Molly B
III, which stated she had lost propulsion and had anchored in the center
of the channel with the Tug Mary Roberts bearing down on her and that she
was in imminent danger of collision. Sector Upper Mississippi River
directed Auxiliary Facility 2620973 to respond to the scene and take
action as necessary to remove Molly B III from danger. Auxiliarist GUYER
made all preparations for the stern tow, while the Coxswain was
maneuvering the vessel. Auxiliarist GUYER’s performance was admirable
especially since this was the first time he had acted in the capacity of
qualified crewmember. He expertly made all lines ready, placed all
fenders out, and handled communications with vessel Molly B III directing
the operator and crew of Molly B III to don lifejackets, to ensure any
passengers were seated away from the sides, to put out all fenders, and to
make ready for towing. As Auxiliary Facility 2620973 maneuvered between
tug Mary Roberts and vessel Molly B III, Auxiliarist GUYER expertly passed
the tow line to the Molly B III and made the tow secure. He then set the
tow watch and ensured the tow was properly tended during the remainder of
the maneuvers to remove Molly B III from its dangerous position." |
